Caring for Senior Pets: Tips for Managing Age-Related Conditions

When our furry friends begin to grow older, their needs begin to change – sometimes subtly, sometimes more noticeably. Just like humans, senior pets require extra care, attention and adjustments to their lifestyle to stay comfortable and healthy. Understanding how to manage age-related conditions can help you improve your dog and cat’s quality of life.

Dogs are generally considered senior around 7+ years and cats around 10+ years. It does depend on the breed, size and overall health of your furry friend though.

Common Age-Related Conditions include:

  • Arthritis – You may notice stiffness, limping, less interest in walks with a difficulty in getting up and climbing the stairs. Arthritis can be managed by maintaining a healthy weight and providing your dogs with a more supportive and cosy bed. Giving a joint supporting supplement could also assist.
  • Teeth and Gum Issues – You may notice a difficulty chewing and bad breath; there may also be some gum inflammation. Support them with softer food and treat options (try our yummy peanut butter). When they have their annual Vet check up, ensure their gums and teeth are checked too.
  • Eye and Ear Issues – As they get into their golden years, you may notice them bumping into things, not hearing you, and perhaps a little anxious. Help them by keeping their routine consistent, try not to move your furniture around too much, and touch their side for comfort. All of this will help them to feel comforted.

General Ageing Management

  • Diet – Their diet is is a crucial part of ageing management. It’s important that they receive easy to digest foods and protein. When giving their favourite Treatos, ensure they are of the highest quality, with natural ingredients.
  • Exercise – For their daily exercise, whilst encouraged, make sure you adapt to their needs – which could be shorter walks, but more frequent. Keeping them focused with a snuffle mat and treats, an enrichment toy or licki mat are all great options.
  • Rest – When resting, orthopedic beds can help with stiff joints and non-slip rugs are perfect around the house, so they don’t slip when getting up and down.

Small changes like all of these things can make all the difference and your pets can continue to live a happy, comfortable, and fulfilling life throughout their golden years.
