As we start to enjoy the coldest months of the year, don’t forget to keep your pawsome friend warm and comfortable! Here are some tips on how to get your pooch through the winter:
- Get them a Winter Coat. Although many dogs have thick fur to keep them warm, when they are outside or on walks in the cold, they will still benefit from wearing a winter coat. This is especially important if you have a thin, older or short-haired breed. A good dog-coat or jersey will give coverage from the neck to the base of the tail while also giving protection to their belly. Make sure your pet’s coat is the right fit and isn’t restricting movement. TIP: Remember, don’t leave your dog’s coat on once they are in a inside as they may over-heat under all those layers!

Raise your dog’s bed to keep your dog off cold tiles or concrete. Heated dog beds can help keep the stiffness out of aging joints. Put your dog’s bed in a warm spot away from drafts, cold tiles or uncarpeted floors; preferably in the usual spot where they sleep every day so that the area doesn’t feel unfamiliar.
- Play “Hide and Seek”. A fun and effective way to help your dog get some exercise during a cold winter’s day is to play a game of hide-and-seek with them. Toss your dog a treat in one direction and while they run after it, move to another part of the home and hide. Then, call out to them and wait for them to find you. They eventually will, but they’ll burn off a lot of excess energy in the process.
